An odd occurrence occurred in the Accra neighborhood of Nima when a purported fetish priest attempted to stop a demolition project and was detained by the police.
The fetish priest was reportedly consulted by some Nima villagers to assist them in halting the destruction of local buildings.
A priest is shown in a video posted online pouring out a bottle of what appears to be local alcohol (akpeteshi) as part of a ritual while wearing traditional clothing, wearing herbs around his neck.
Police personnel were on duty to monitor the practice as he got closer to the demolition site.
The fetish priest was heard saying that “Bio” was the owner of the land while the police officers begged him to keep calm.
The priest was eventually led away from the scene by the police. It’s not clear what exact part the priest was trying to play in stopping the demolition or what happened thereafter.
This occurrence serves as a reminder of the many different cultural practices and beliefs that can interact with different facets of daily life, including legal and administrative issues.
