The Voters registration exercise started today, 12th September, 2023, at the various EC district offices, in the country.
This is to allow applicants without it to get access to have one, and become a holder of voters identification card, and also have the right to vote as a citizen at any given time, in any national elections.
In Ashaiman constituency it delays more than two hours, before the registration exercise began.
The eligible and qualified applicants queued to part-takes in the exercise, for a long time, due to the slow movement of the queue, and it became very hectic and miserable.
One classical reasons was that the time schedule for the exercise to begins was 8:00am and the exercise didn’t start at the proposed time schedule.
There was a break down of the machines due to network challenge, which was very poorus.
Upon all the frustrations the applicants went through there wasn’t any agitations raised by none of the time, thou it was unbearable to some extent, to queued for a long hours, stacking at one particular place for long overdue.
The sitting member of Parliament, the legislature, Hon .Enerst Henry Norbey when speaking to the media, he said that it is very frustrative for applicants to joined a long queue for many hours, and appeal to the EC, to provide adequate machines since the population in Ashaiman, is very overwhelming.
He advised the EC to make sure that the applicants should get registered so that they can’t be prevented not to vote in the upcoming district Assembly elections.
He added that if the applicants realized that there is a deliberate attempt to defranchised, them from their civil and constitutional right, it can lead to something else if care is not taken, because to control applicants who couldn’t get the access to register, will be very difficult.
The constituency chairman for th ruling new patriotic party (NPP) Hon.Alexander Amanor also added his voice to the unforseen circumstances , that get most of the people in EC office in Ashaiman irritative,he said this is a national assignment so everyone needs to get involved and ensured that the registration exercise goes well, irrespective of someone political divide.
The constituency chairman for Ashaiman- NDC Hon, Alhaji shadad Umar Jallo described the registration process to be a waste of time, since the EC has not put in place right measures, to ensure that the process will go on successfully.
He stressed more about his displeasures of wasting applicants time and if care is not taken , it might disenfranchise the good people of Ashaiman.
He revealed to the media that the EC brought only 2 machines, to register 400 applicants in a day, which he seems to be impossible, to him, and that was the major cause of the delayance in the registration process
He mentioned that, other constituencies are notb facing the challenges the good people of Ashaiman went through , hence the officials of the EC should make sure that, they will solved all the challenges and ensure that the process will go on smoothfully.
The Communication Officer for the NDC in the Ashaiman Constituency, Joe Ashaiman said he is not comfortable with whatever is going on and he thinks the EC is sabotaging the people of Ashaiman because Ashaiman is a stronghold for the NDC.
The Constituency secretary for the ruling party NPP, Mr Jacob Anaman Otoo suggested that the EC should go offline so that they can register more applicants to prevent further confusions.
By the end of the day voters identification cards (ID)was issued, 20 to eligible applicants.
